Fashion, friendship and vulnerability intertwine in Sofia Coppola’s upcoming documentary about Marc Jacobs, premiering at the 2025 Venice Film Festival.

We return to the raw intimacy that defines Sofia Coppola’s gaze. But this time, it’s through the lens of friendship and fashion. Marc by Sofia, set to premiere out of competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, is Coppola’s first documentary and focuses on Marc Jacobs, designer, icon and longtime confidant of the director.

The title nods to Jacobs’s cult sub-label Marc by Marc Jacobs, but also reflects the personal tone of the film. Coppola and Jacobs met in 1990s downtown New York and have shared decades of creative exchange, from shows to campaigns and red carpets. Now, for the first time, that shared world opens up to the viewer.

Coppola, known for exploring emotional depth and restraint, turns her lens toward a subject unafraid of vulnerability. Jacobs, who has navigated fame, collapse and reinvention, offers a story of survival as much as style.

What makes this film stand out is not just access, but affection. This isn’t a biopic. It’s a portrait built from lived connection. From grunge to Louis Vuitton to his recent, more introspective work, Jacobs is seen here through someone who has always been watching, quietly and closely.

In the context of recent fashion documentaries, Marc by Sofia promises something more reflective: not the myth of the genius, but the complexity of a man revealed by someone who knows him beyond the headlines.
