The third and final chapter of ‘The Swap’ brings Marc Jacobs’ New York mystery to an end, after an accidental bag exchange, a trail of intimate clues and two strangers trying to find their way back to one another.

The mystery surrounding the Scene Bag reaches its conclusion with ‘The Twist’, the third chapter of the Marc Jacobs microdrama starring Jemima Kirke and Rowan Blanchard. It began in August with ‘The Swap’, when the two women accidentally exchanged identical bags after a Marc Jacobs show in New York, continued with ‘The Hunt’, and now closes with their final encounter.

The mistake turns two strangers into detectives of each other’s lives. Sage, keys, a taser and an unfinished Icee become clues as Jemima and Rowan try to imagine the woman behind the other bag, while Jeremy O. Harris narrates their increasingly eccentric search across New York. The objects reveal fragments of their owners, leaving the rest to assumption.

In ‘The Twist’, Jemima’s final clues lead her to Bookmarc, where Rowan waits with the Scene Bag. Their reunion becomes almost divinatory: the belongings collected throughout the story are laid out like tarot cards as they reconstruct the coincidences and misunderstandings that connected them.

The idea follows ‘The Scene’, written by and starring Rachel Sennott earlier this year. ‘The Swap’ takes that fiction somewhere more intimate. The handbag becomes a personal archive, filled with ordinary traces from which an identity can be imagined. By ‘The Twist’, reading those objects resembles reading cards: searching for meaning in what another person leaves behind.
