Ashley Williams imagines what happens when the battles we cannot win stop demanding a solution and begin to reveal another way of living.
There is a strange freedom in accepting that some battles cannot be won. That tension sits at the heart of Ashley Williams SS27, presented during London Fashion Week and shaped by ‘What’s Eating Gilbert Grape’, particularly Bonnie Grape, played by Darlene Cates. From that reference, Williams builds a collection around powerlessness, acceptance and the possibility of transcendence. Detachment becomes a way of loosening our attachment to control.
That idea moves through the clothes and the emotional weight given to everyday objects. Faded florals recall curtains and old upholstery. Bedsheets become dresses, camisoles slip into sportswear and pink satin gathers into volumes resembling an unmade bed. Soft toys are pushed inside tights and wrapped around the body, turning childhood possessions into something between comfort, memory and burden.
Sweetness, nostalgia and discomfort coexist throughout. The collaboration with YVMIN extends that vocabulary through Siamese cats rendered like porcelain ornaments and an oversized music box watch containing a tiny ballerina.
The identical bobs and pale pink lips echo Williams’ fascination with Bonnie Grape, whom she has described as an underrated beauty icon. Together with the dated domestic prints, they leave the models suspended somewhere between housewife, doll and remembered character.
Once the unwinnable battle is accepted, attention shifts towards what remains close and emotionally charged. Williams turns detachment into something expansive, finding dignity, tenderness and transcendence in letting go.
