‘The Art of Layering Lived-Memories’ brings an international community of creatives together to experience the new Replica fragrances ‘Up at Dawn’ and ‘Chasing Sunsets’, from Sintra to Costa da Caparica.

Conceived as a three-day sensory experience, ‘The Art of Layering Lived-Memories’ brought Maison Margiela Fragrances and an international circle of creative voices together in Portugal in early June to discover the new Replica fragrances ‘Up at Dawn’ and ‘Chasing Sunsets’. From the gardens of Sintra’s Palácio de Seteais to the Atlantic coast of Costa da Caparica, masterclasses and immersive activities connected each scent with a landscape, atmosphere and time of day, turning Replica’s concept of fragrance as memory into a shared experience.

Morning began in Sintra, among the gardens of the eighteenth-century Palácio de Seteais. Its landscape of quintas, royal retreats and gardens shaped by the surrounding woodland accompanied ‘Up at Dawn’, inspired by a misty rose garden in Windsor in 2025. The masterclasses explored its combination of pink pepper, soil accord, rose absolute, orris, ambrette and moss.

The journey continued on the Atlantic shore of Costa da Caparica. Its coastal culture combines a longstanding fishing heritage with beach life and fifteen kilometres of surf spots. During golden hour, this setting introduced ‘Chasing Sunsets’, an evocation of Ipanema Beach in 1965 through mango, cardamom, tuberose, sandalwood and vanilla.

Two locations and two times of day structured the journey: morning in Sintra and sunset on Caparica’s coast. Throughout July, Maison Margiela Fragrances has shared the full experience in a carefully paced sequence of photographs and videos, which you can enjoy on its Instagram profile.
