Julio Romero de Torres and Federico García Lorca frame a personal vision of Andalucía shaped by memory, restraint, work and the sudden release of celebration.
A quieter, darker Andalucía emerges through Moisés Nieto’s Spring Summer 2027 collection, presented during MBFW Madrid. The designer looks back to his native landscape through childhood memories, village life and the particular intimacy of places where gazes, silences and untold stories become part of everyday experience.
The women of Julio Romero de Torres provide a visual vocabulary of austere faces, contained emotion and quiet strength. Their presence resonates with Nieto’s generous volumes, fabrics gathered around the body and layers concentrated at the waist, translating emotional restraint into construction. Federico García Lorca expands that territory through an Andalucía where desire, tragedy, earth, silence and festivity coexist. Black becomes the connecting thread, carrying associations with mourning, night, secrets and memory, while burgundy, intense red, pale blue, nude and flashes of Klein blue introduce different degrees of light and intensity.
The collection also reaches into Andalucía’s layered cultural history, drawing on the coexistence of different influences rather than reproducing recognisable folkloric codes. Tunic-like forms and elongated silhouettes sit alongside equestrian references, generous knitwear, patchwork and fabrics knotted or wrapped around the body. Rolled cuffs introduce a simple gesture associated with everyday work, grounding the more dramatic volumes in lived experience.
Then comes the verbena. Live music from the Banda del Amor de Úbeda transforms the runway into a space of collective release, bringing movement and celebration into dialogue with the collection’s sobriety. At its centre is a contemporary Andalusian woman who works, remembers, dresses and celebrates. Her heritage remains visible as something lived and transformed, carrying a history even when she chooses not to tell it.
