The Femcels just dropped the video for ‘Is Loser An Emotion You Feel Too?’, directed by Barney Ogden.
For Rowan Miles and Gabriella Turton, sarcasm is less a defense mechanism than a creative language. The London duo have built a world where awkwardness, insecurity, beauty standards, dating and the endless pressure of being perceived can all become material for a joke, a song or a deliberately ridiculous pop moment. Even the name came before the music. When Miles and Turton first went into a studio together in February 2024, they reportedly had no songs written and little more than a name: The Femcels. Taken from the internet term “femcel”, itself a female counterpart to the word “incel”, the name was conceived with an awareness of the absurdity surrounding online labels and identities. Rather than taking the term at face value, they turned it into something exaggerated, self aware and deliberately funny. It perfectly set the tone for what would follow.
That willingness to laugh at themselves has become one of the most distinctive parts of The Femcels’ music. Their debut album I Have to Get Hotter, produced by Ike Clateman of Bassvictim, runs through electroclash, twee, punk, chiptune and cartoonishly infectious pop while taking aim at the strange indignities of being young and online in the 2020s. Their growing profile has also seen them share stages with Charli xcx and Frost Children. Beneath the jokes are feelings that are considerably less ridiculous: wanting to be desired, feeling unattractive, navigating relationships, comparing yourself to everyone on the internet and wondering whether you are somehow failing at adulthood. Now, ‘Is Loser An Emotion You Feel Too?’ brings that particular worldview into a new visual chapter.
